Land Acknowledgement
The campuses and satellite sites of Collège Boréal serve many traditional Indigenous territories. The Collège respects, acknowledges and honours the histories and cultures of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit on all the territories on which we gather. Collège Boréal extends its thanks to the Indigenous communities for their cooperation and for their contributions to a rich heritage.
The Louis-Riel Centre provides Indigenous students a safe space that offers a whole range of support services. An Elder is on site to give advice and guidance to Indigenous students in a setting that encourages academic success. The Centre organizes and promotes activities, celebrations, presentations, workshops and cultural events, either in-person or remote, to the entire Boréal community.

Responsibilities of the Indigenous Project Manager (full-time)
- Welcome, guide and refer students to available services.
- Support students who are directly affected by issues and crises due to cultural differences.
- Monitor student progress and implement student retention and success efforts leading to graduation.
- Manage and coordinate Indigenous projects and the Louis-Riel Centre.
- Manage strategic planning, partnership development, networking, and community involvement.
- Manage staff.
- Manage the development of programs and support services for the success and retention of Indigenous students.
- Participate in internal and external advisory committees.
- Manage the operation of the Indigenous Education Council.
- Act as a resource person for the Indigenous Education Council.
- Manage grant applications.
Responsibilities of Indigenous Elders (part-time)
- Support students who are directly affected by issues and crises due to cultural differences.
- Provide culturally appropriate spiritual guidance.
- Convey the concepts and beliefs of spiritual and ceremonial traditions.
- Conduct outreach workshops or traditional spiritual ceremonies.
- Advise College staff on how to reconcile aspects of traditional cultures with programs and courses.
- Serve as a reliable source of information on Indigenous heritage.
- Recount Indigenous history.
- Facilitate discussions.
- Provide all members of the student community and staff with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and awareness of the context and historical role of Indigenous peoples in Canada and their contemporary circumstances and aspirations.
- Act as consultants in all activities initiated by the Louis-Riel Centre to maximize the impact of their expertise and experiences on the Centre’s activities.
Vision
The Indigenous Education Council (IEC) supports and guides the Louis-Riel Centre and Collège Boréal in any project designed for Indigenous education.
Mission
The IEC supports Collège Boréal and federated colleges in their Indigenous education projects. It ensures that the Collège offers students the critical knowledge and skills they need to then use them for the benefit of Indigenous communities. The IEC encourages a cooperative approach between the Ministry of Colleges and Universities; Collège Boréal; federated colleges and universities; the Métis, First Nations and Inuit; community and regional organizations; partners and Indigenous teaching establishments.
The IEC ensures that the educational needs and cultural specificities of Indigenous students are met as adequately as possible. The IEC encourages all students, professors and staff at the Collège as well as members of the local communities to be educated and informed of the traditions, heritage and culture of the Indigenous Peoples in order to celebrate the value and pride in their cultural heritage without the threat of assimilation.
Composition and Procedures:
- The Council must be comprised of nine (9) members from the Indigenous communities served by Collège Boréal campuses, including one student registered to post-secondary studies and one alumni of the Collège.
- Two Collège Boréal staff members also sit on the IEC as additional resource people but are not included in the nine members.
- Quorum is established at 50% + 1.
- The Collège nominates its internal representatives to sit on the Council as resource people.
- The chair of the IEC is elected from among the external members.
- Each member acts as a representative of the entire Collège and not in the interest of their particular organization.
- Member mandates last for a two-year term and can be renewed, in alternating years.
- Individual students may be replaced on the IEC if their program of study lasts only one (1) year.
- Meeting dates are set by the IEC chair (at least three times per year).
- The agenda is prepared and sent before each meeting by a Collège resource person.
- Any documents required for the meeting are sent to members electronically by the Collège’s permanent staff.
- The minutes from each meeting are sent to members after the meeting.

- Have influence over the decisions that impact Indigenous students.
- Represent the population of Indigenous students
- Make recommendations
- Offer counsel on Indigenous projects and projects at Louis-Riel Centre
