Stand-alone nursing programs in Ontario Colleges will strengthen health-care training

11 February 2020

Collège Boréal welcomes the Ontario government’s decision to allow colleges to deliver stand-alone nursing programs leading to a degree in nursing. This decision will help to provide more qualified nurses in response to the shortage of professionals in this sector across the province.

Up until now, colleges offering nursing programs were required to partner with a university to deliver a nursing degree. Students enrolled in college programs were required to complete their studies in a university to be able to practice as nurses, even though most colleges are able to deliver 90%, and in some cases 100%, of the nursing sciences curriculum.

Simplifying the student’s pathway to a nursing degree reduces the cost of training and makes nursing programs more attractive to many students. It also helps to create a more diverse nursing workforce, as many newcomers, first-generation students and Indigenous students tend to choose a college education.

Over the coming months, Collège Boréal will look into the possibility of offering stand-alone nursing degrees, taking into account community needs and the college’s educational specifications, existing partnerships and partnerships under negotiation.

Allowing colleges to offer stand-alone nursing programs is very good news for students who wish to study in the field of health sciences. This decision helps to make the profession more accessible for many students and addresses the shortage of nurses, especially in isolated communities.
Graduates of healthcare programs provided by Ontario colleges demonstrate the quality of their expertise and college training every day through the care they deliver in hospitals, retirement residences and home care settings. The government of Ontario’s decision is a well-deserved recognition of the colleges’ commitment and capacity to train talented and dedicated healthcare professionals. The same standards of excellence will apply to the nursing degree programs that colleges will deliver in the future.
