Stand-alone nursing programs in Ontario Colleges will strengthen health-care training
Collège Boréal welcomes the Ontario government’s decision to allow colleges to deliver stand-alone nursing programs leading to a degree in nursing. This decision will help to provide more qualified nurses in response to the shortage of professionals in this sector across the province.
Up until now, colleges offering nursing programs were required to partner with a university to deliver a nursing degree. Students enrolled in college programs were required to complete their studies in a university to be able to practice as nurses, even though most colleges are able to deliver 90%, and in some cases 100%, of the nursing sciences curriculum.
Simplifying the student’s pathway to a nursing degree reduces the cost of training and makes nursing programs more attractive to many students. It also helps to create a more diverse nursing workforce, as many newcomers, first-generation students and Indigenous students tend to choose a college education.
Over the coming months, Collège Boréal will look into the possibility of offering stand-alone nursing degrees, taking into account community needs and the college’s educational specifications, existing partnerships and partnerships under negotiation.
