Coronavirus: Toronto’s Francophone Week cancels its 2020 edition

12 March 2020

La Semaine de la francophonie de Toronto (Toronto’s Francophonie Week) regretfully announces the cancellation of its 2020 edition in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.

This preventive cancellation concerns the three events directly organized by the organizing committee of La Semaine de la francophonie:

  • The Opening Cocktail on Thursday, March 19 at Design Exchange;
  • The Journée familiale (Family Day) on Saturday, March 21 at Collège Boréal;
  • Boucar Diouf’s shows on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28 at the Alliance française de Toronto.

Considering the rapidly evolving situation regarding the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the uncertainties that remain, the steering committee for Toronto’s Francophonie Week felt it necessary to take measures to avoid any gathering that could potentially contribute to the spread of the virus. The safety of those who participate in our events has always been and remains our main priority.

La Semaine de la francophonie de Toronto’s Steering Committee thanks all of the francophone organizations that are members of the Semaine, our sponsors and media partners, our francophone partners, the many dignitaries who planned to attend the cocktail, as well as all of our volunteers.

La Semaine de la francophonie de Toronto will be back next year to celebrate its 20th edition.

Cancelling the 20th edition of La Semaine de la francophonie de Toronto is a tough decision to take but, considering the context, it was the only responsible one. Our events bring together sizeable crowds, whether it be 150 people per night for the shows at the Alliance française de Toronto or up to 500 for the opening cocktail. These numbers are such that holding these events would not be compatible with the best practices that are being recommended to help limit the spread of the virus.

About

La Semaine de la langue française et de la Francophonie (The French Language and La Francophonie Week) is a cultural event held annually in many countries and many Canadian provinces and cities, with the support of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, on or about March 20, International Francophonie Day.

Toronto’s Semaine de la Francophonie (Francophonie Week) in its current form was launched in 2001. Every year, under the leadership of an organizing committee made up of local Francophone institutions, the community is invited to develop a series of cultural, artistic, literary or scientific events aiming to celebrate and promote French language and culture in all its forms and all its diversity.
