Full Description

This continuing education program consisting of three part-time courses allows professionals in the field to ensure compliance with the provincial legislative framework, notably expectations regarding the pedagogical approach. This micro-certificate supports the development of skills that enable participants to create, support and evaluate high-quality learning programs that showcase pedagogical approaches which align with the vision of the Early Learning and Child Care Framework.

Program Courses

Leadership in early childhood education (30 hours)

In this course, students will develop their leadership skills to support and supervise their teams. We will study theories of leadership, including the major schools of thought, the personal traits of leaders and the main styles of leadership and management. This course will teach students to employ a reflective practice to identify their own leadership style, understand the importance of leadership among early childhood education managers and develop their skills as a leader.

Educational program design (28 hours)

In this course, students will develop their skills in defining and drafting a program philosophy based on the organization’s values. Students will also be required to develop objectives that support the philosophy and implement a pedagogical approach to structure the program statement they draft. Through a wide range of activities, students will learn strategies for developing an academic program that complies with departmental requirements and aligns with the early childhood education institution’s philosophy, in order to make change in the workplace.

Curriculum implementation/assessment (28 hours)

In this course, students will explore strategies for implementing and assessing curricula and educational programs in early childhood education. A special focus will be given to clearly communicating a program’s vision, mandate and philosophy to staff and families and to applying the program’s philosophy in programs across the board, at all levels of the organization. We will study different assessment tools and strategies, as well as how to apply them to assess program quality and performance on curriculum objectives in order to develop a continuous improvement action plan.
