Understanding the Program

About the Program

Ontario colleges offer a pathway for employed Personal Support Workers (PSWs) who wish to pursue further education to become Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) in Ontario. This pathway provides flexible study options tailored to working PSWs to enhance essential skills in practical nursing.

After completing six courses, PSWs will qualify for advanced standing in a four-semester Practical Nursing (PN) program at a public college. Graduates of an approved PN program will be eligible to take the registration exam with the College of Nurses of Ontario to obtain their RPN designation.

These courses are funded by the Ontario government’s Nursing Program Transformation in Ontario’s Colleges initiative.
